Community Spotlight: A Conversation with Mayumi Shinozuka
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mayumi Shinozuka, a senior at Drury University, who’s not only majoring in Cyber-Risk Management and Business Economics (with a minor in Computer Science) but is also leading the way in empowering others in technology.
Jill: Mayumi, you’re doing some incredible things at Drury! Tell us about your role on campus.
Mayumi: I currently serve as the President of the Cyber Defense Club, where our goal is to create a welcoming and collaborative space for students to strengthen their cybersecurity skills through hands-on projects and competitions. We participate in events like the National Cyber League, Cyber Force, and the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition—all great opportunities for real-world experience.
Jill: That’s impressive! What drives your passion for this field?
Mayumi: I’ve always loved problem-solving, especially in areas that constantly evolve and challenge me to think creatively and technically. As an international student, I also bring a unique perspective to leadership—helping others feel supported and included is something I care deeply about.
Jill: Inclusion and empowerment are such core values of Women in Tech. How do those ideas resonate with you?
Mayumi: I’m committed to encouraging more women to pursue opportunities in technology and to building a community where everyone feels comfortable and valued. That’s why being part of Springfield Women in Tech is so exciting—it connects me with other women who inspire me and give me endless opportunities to learn and grow.
Jill: You’re balancing a lot! What do you enjoy outside of tech?
Mayumi: I’m a competitive NCAA Division II triathlete and manage the campus bike shop. Both experiences push me to stay driven, adaptable, and team-oriented—qualities that carry over into my work in cybersecurity, too.
Mayumi’s energy, curiosity, and leadership embody the future of women in technology. We’re proud to spotlight her as part of the Springfield WiT community and can’t wait to see the impact she continues to make.
